About Mistra Digital Forest

Mistra Digital Forest is a research programme that supports societal transition to a sustainable circular bioeconomy. Sustainable forestry plays a key role here – forest raw materials can provide competitive alternatives to fossil-based and non-circular products. Increasing digitalisation in the forestry value chain is a prerequisite for accelerating the transition, and in making Sweden a competitive forest industry nation, that can be a leading force in sustainable societal development and a circular bioeconomy.

The programme focuses on developing useful digital tools and automation techniques that take advantage of the huge amounts of data available in the forestry sector. By collecting, structuring and processing data all the way from the forest owner to the factory, the Swedish forest industry can increase its profitability and at the same time meet society’s high demands for sustainability. The programme addresses the UN’s sustainable development goals through competitive solutions that help to mitigate climate change, to reduce dependence on finite resources and to protect forest biodiversity.
In early 2023, Mistra Digital Forest entered its second phase. The focus here is on practical benefits, that the research in the programme is carried forward and managed by forestry stakeholders, in order for a digital forest-based value chain to become a reality. The path to getting there goes via the enablers that have been identified by the programme’s stakeholders within research and industry.
The programme consists of four work packages (WP):
