We do this by developing methods, models and digital tools that contribute to a digital forestry value chain that to pave the way for a circular bioeconomy.

For the first time, scientists have succeeded in creating a self-driving forest machine controlled by artificial intelligence. In a research study at Umeå University, an AI system was developed that can operate the 16-ton machine without human intervention. The study has been carried out in collaboration with Skogforsk and Algoryx Simulation.
Laser scanning sensors are becoming cheaper and can increase precision in forestry. However, no one has tested whether the technology can be used to assess crook or sweep of trees during harvesting - a decision support system with this capability would increase the resource efficiency of the forest industry. This is currently being explored within Mistra Digital Forest, in collaboration with Komatsu, who would like to develop the technology.

A new survey provides a picture of the current degree of digital maturity in Swedish forestry. The results are based on interviews with some of Sweden’s largest forest companies, and have been carried out within the Mistra Digital Forest research program.
Mistra Digital Forest is funded by Mistra and other actors. The program is led by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, the partners in the program are BillerudKorsnäs, Holmen, SCA, Stora Enso, Sveaskog, Södra, SLU, IVL, Skogforsk, Umeå University and KTH.
